I often see bald-faced hornets on the old spruce stump, gathering wood fibers for their nest. But I've never seen a nest in our yard, which is a bit surprising to me. They are aerial yellowjackets - which means that they build their nests above ground, in trees, under eaves, etc.
They've never caused any problems for us. There aren't that many of them and they don't seem aggressive. They are sometimes attracted to our hummingbird feeders, though.
